To the Parents and Community of Walton School

These are the findings of the Education Review Office's latest report on
Walton School.

Walton School is a small, well-established primary school situated 13 kilometres north of Matamata, set in attractive, well-kept grounds.  A stable staff and caring community work in partnership to provide a positive and supportive learning environment.

Students receive a sound education with a strong emphasis on all aspects of literacy.  A focus of curriculum implementation is the special needs programmes that caters for the diverse range of student abilities.

Teachers work as a team to provide quality learning opportunities for students.  Ongoing staff development, including keeping up to date with curriculum initiatives, has assisted staff to implement effective programmes.  Curriculum self-review is a feature and assists the staff, board and community to know where students are at in their learning and to report on overall school effectiveness.

Most students are achieving at and above their chronological age in reading.  Intervention programmes support the few who are in need of additional assistance in literacy.  Well-resourced classroom environments and the high quality library facilities encourage students to read for recreation and research.  Further refinement to the school's reporting systems should enable parents and caregivers to better understand their children's progress and achievement.

Traditional values such as respect, tolerance and responsibility are reinforced through teacher modelling and the high expectations in classroom programmes.  Students are polite, welcoming and friendly.  A family atmosphere pervades the school.

The principal is hardworking, has developed a strong team culture among staff and is supportive of all school personnel.  He knows his community well and is responsive to its needs and wishes.  Together with his staff and community he takes a pride in the school environment.

The board of trustees is knowledgable and well informed.  It has a strong focus on providing appropriate resources to promote student learning.  Trustees work collaboratively with the principal and staff to enhance the learning environment and provide support for all school activities.

ERO's next review of Walton School will be in accordance with the regular schedule of the Education Review Office.

Review Coverage

ERO reviews do not cover every aspect of school performance and each ERO report may cover different issues.  The aim is to provide information on aspects that are central to student achievement and useful to this school.
